But the density of his work as a whole can get a bit tiring. He is the New York Times bestselling author of a dozen novels, including the horror classic Ghost Story and The Talisman, which he cowrote with Stephen King. His latest novel, Black House—also written with King—is a #1 New York Times bestseller. Up there, in the best workplace I’ve ever had or will have, I began the final third, still writing by hand in big journals.

Peter Straub came to prominence in 1979 with Ghost Story, an old fashioned spooky ghost tale which I wasn't really a fan of (though I appreciate it). I can't say how much I didn't enjoy this book. It was weird and strange and took too much imagination to even make sense. Straub is detailed, eccentric, and is a natural story teller.

I first read Shadowland around the time it was first published and loved it then. Shadowland follows two friends Del and Tom in boarding school. by Berkley He just drones on for pages at a time. It is a horror novel that has strong elements of fantasy. Please try again Prime members enjoy FREE Delivery and exclusive access to music, movies, TV shows, original audio series, and Kindle books. Was 12 when I first read it, I remember getting it from the local library. Same edition, yellowed by time. Typing up a whole book at one go cannot be anything but excruciatingly boring, especially for one-fingered typists, but the process gave me another chance to revise. Many thanks

Then things get trippy, and then trippier (the bugs bunny The first part of this book really wraps you up in the young characters lives--makes you feel as if you know them a little, the rest gets wilder by the page, as the boys make a trip to the magicians house.....evil magic....and a magician looking for THE ONE to cary on in his place when the time comes (he doesn't care a bit that one is his nephew). Straub is always excellent but with Shadowland he has set a standard that has only been matched by Ghost Story, Koko and The Throat.

Shadowland is a richly written, complex books that I quickly became engrossed in. Second setting: the labyrinthine house of a weird magician uncle in New England, where the two boys spend a memorable summer being trained in the art of illusion. Disappointed despite mr straubb being such a good author. By September, the architect, the contractor, and a platoon of carpenters had turned the place into a beehive.I wrote the middle third of SHADOWLAND in what would be its dedicatee’s bedroom as soon as all the worker bees had vacated my brand-new office on the floor above. If there is a survey it only takes 5 minutes, try any survey which works for you. I've always said this was one of my favourite horror novels, and this re-read, all these years later did nothing to dissuade me from this opinion. No wonder King keeps wanting to write books with him. This book was my January 2016 buddy read with super-reading buddy This book was my January 2016 buddy read with super-reading buddy Despite the fact that Peter Straub is my second-favorite author, I always go into his books with a slight sense of trepidation and doubt. It's as clear as day to me that J.K Rowling had read SHADOWLAND before writing Potter, but it's such a longer, broader and more immersive project than Peter Straub novel, I kind of shook my head and denied Tom Flanagan and Del Nightingale any emotional connection on my end.

There are plenty of fantasy elements, there are plenty of horror elements.

As a result, it often feels like reading a somewhat disjointed and overwhelming sum of lovely individual parts. You're listening to a sample of the Audible audio edition.Something went wrong. It seems like there's no escape...and a promise that one will end up dead.

I just hated the ending. Making it a work that, sadly, few of the younger generation have read. If I were able to type, why would I bother writing everything out in longhand to begin with? This is most likely my favorite book by the undisputed master of supernatural fiction (though "Ghost Story" and "Floating Dragon" are close contenders, followed by "Julia", "If You Could See Me Now" and "Koko"). In his first post- Ghost Story novel, Peter Straub turned almost wholly away from the horror genre, and instead published Shadowland, a fantasy novel that is deeply informed by fairy tale and myth. I have a lot of thoughts.

By the spring of 1979, Ben was old enough to understand most of what was said to him, and I had jumped at the chance to entertain him by inventing stories.Nightly, stories poured out of me, as from an inexhaustible source.

There was an agreeable rented house on Crooked Mile Road in Westport, Connecticut, and by the end of the summer, we had signed the papers for an older, larger, even more agreeable house on Westport’s Beachside Avenue.
